Question:

I enjoy giving presentations, once I get going, but I have a difficult time getting started. Seems like the first 10 minutes or so are tense and stiff. How can I get going strong right out of the gate?

Answer:

First off, there is no substitute for being prepared. Learn and know your material inside and out. Then, practice, practice, and practice some more. Practice in front of the mirror; practice in front of a friend or colleague; go over and over your presentation while you are driving down the road in your car. Work especially hard on the opening. Having a strong polished opening will get you started in a memorable way that will get you past your problems and engage the audience from the start. Finally, visualize yourself standing in front of your audience delivering your presentation in a dynamic, confident, and powerful way.
